Research Interests: Medieval Arabic poetry, Hispano-Arabic studies, Arabic instruction in Islamic schools, Arabic-Malay/Indonesian Islamic texts

Biography: Dr. Cowell teaches advanced Arabic classes at the University of Wisconsin. From 1994 to 1996, he was a visiting professor of Arabic at the International Institute of Islamic Thought and Civilization in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. He has also conducted research in Tunisia, Mauritania, and Egypt, and is currently doing comparative studies of Arabic and Malay and Indonesian language and literature.
